Review

Wolfgang Petersen's epic - but still extremely condensed - retelling of Homer's "The Illiad" features Brad Pitt as hunky anti-hero Achilles (but looking more like a sculpted Fabio), who leads the Greek army on the fabled siege of the city of Troy, which is defended by Hulky hero Hector (Eric Bana) and his brother, prissy Paris (teen heartthrob Orlando Bloom), whose affair with Helen of Troy has ignited this war. "Troy" is a great looking film, and features a few terrifically-staged, gargantuan battle scenes, as well as some brilliantly choreographed one-on-one fights, but it isn't as emotionally involving as "Gladiator" (which it most resembles), and often plays like a Cliff's Notes version of the original tale. While not entirely successful, it boasts a huge supporting cast of great actors, including Brian Cox, Peter O'Toole, Sean Bean & Julie Christie (who's actually only in one scene), most of whom easily upstage the stars. If your idea of a good time is watching sweaty studs in skirts fight, who sometimes stop to brood about fighting before fighting some more, this is the movie for you.
