“Tsubasa” isn’t perfect, but it is a unique anime series.

The series: Syaoran, Fay, a “Pokemon” esque creature called Mokona, Kurogane, and a Princess named Sakura transport to other worlds in search of feathers (which are apparently a part of Sakura’s memories). Volume 9 contains episodes 37-40 which are titled “Mokona The Artist,” “Dangerous Road,” “Parting Of Beginnings,” and “Black Steel.” These 4 eps. see Syaoran and company being trapped in a drawing and chasing after a feather on a bus. We also learn about Kurogane’s tragic past.

“Tsubasa” is certainly a creative and imaginative anime series, but it is not flawless. Firstly, the premise about collecting feathers is decidedly thin and reminds me of a lame RPG video game quest. Secondly, I really could have done without the Mokona character. Granted, he is crucial to the plot, but the writers could have come up with another way for the gang to travel to other worlds.

Complaints aside, “Tsubasa” succeeds thanks to some superb characterization. Even though very little happens in “Dangerous Roads” and “Parting Of The Beginnings,” I have to say that I dug the characters on board the bus (especially the wise old man). I enjoyed seeing how chance/fateful encounters impacted others lives. Plus, I think the decision to create layered characters in each of the worlds Syaoran and crew visit really makes the show worth watching because we don’t just have to see the lead characters.

The widescreen picture contains sharp looking animation. The colors are quite striking especially during “Dangerous Road.”

The English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese Stereo tracks are fine.
