“Two Evil Eyes” is a two film movie based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Story one (by George Romero”) is called “The Facts In The Case Of Mr. Valdemar” and it revolves around a gold digging wife who plots to get her ill husband’s money by having him hypnotized and signing the money over to her. When the hypnotism goes wrong, the husband winds up dead and is stuck between life and death. Naturally, he’s mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. In story two (by Dario Argento) titled “The Black Cat,” a drunken photographer is driven mad by a black cat and winds up ruining not only his own life, but others as well.

As a horror aficionado, I expected “Two Evil Eyes” to be worth my time as I am a great admirer of both Romero and Argento. Sadly, the movie is rather passable. Sure, the acting by Adrienne Barbeau/Harvey Keitel and the makeup f/x by Tom Savini are worth noting, but they can’t overcome the poor writing. ‘Valdemar’ is a fairly routine horror story that isn’t scary in the slightest, and ‘Cat’ is completely over the top and filled with laughably bizarre surrealistic images such as a cat smashing through a wall and a “Weekend At Bernie’s” like scene. If you want to see a GREAT version of "The Black Cat," check out Stuart Gordon's episode of the same name from the underrated "Masters Of Horror" television series.
