"Vexille" is an intelligent animated film.

The futuristic plot: 10 years after the technology hungry Japan isolated themselves from the rest of the world, an organization named S.W.O.R.D. sends an elite squad in the country to see if they have been developing illegal androids. As it turns out, the country is hiding a huge secret which goes above and beyond simple android production.

“Vexille” is not another brainless action oriented anime film about robots, but rather an intelligent, provoking and relevant look at the ever growing dangers of technology. The film, which was written and directed by Sori, clearly shows the viewer a fully realized futuristic world in which the drive to create more sophisticated technology is more apparent than ever. I especially liked the idea that a country would go against the United Nations just to take technology to a whole new level.

Unfortunately, “Vexille” does fumble in the final act. Rather than sticking with the thought provoking premise, the movie switches gears and becomes more like a video game with tunnel chases and the like. Also, I have to admit that many of the human characters looked a bit stiff animation wise. I hardly saw anyone blink! Luckily, the CGI landscapes and technological designs more than make up for the shortcomings.

The 16:9 widescreen picture looks as clear as a DVD can possibly get. Every frame of the CGI animation is quite simply gorgeous.

The English dub and Japanese 5.1 Dolby Surround tracks are solid, but I was left wanting more in same cases. The action could have sounded bigger and better.

The only extras include trailers for “Shinobi,” “Blue Gender,” “Afro Samurai,” “Witchblade,” “The Galaxy Railways,” “Full Metal Panic!,” “Burst Angel,” “Glass Fleet,” and “Baldr Force Exe.”

Disney DVD Game World: Disney Dogs

Category: Quick Reviews
"Disney Dogs" is, in a nutshell, a DVD trivia board game, where up to four players use the remote to advance Disney pups through various movie or theme park settings (such as "The Fox and the Hound," "Oliver & Company" and Mickey's Toon Town), collecting blue and gold ribbons either by answering trivia questions or engaging in rudimentary games. The games are simple enough for the kids to have a shot at, but unless you're an expert in all-things-Disney, the trivia questions are often pretty difficult (even in the 'family mode'). The game itself is kind of fun, though frustrating at times; characters keep snatching away ribbons and, being a DVD game, there are long pauses in between every player's move. In addition, the more gold ribbons a player earns, the more consecutive turns they get, meaning everyone else who's playing ends up waiting a looooong time for their next turn (at one point, I waited a full 10 minutes between turns). Still, the disc features lots of cute clips from various Disney movies featuring dogs, and if you're patient enough, is a pleasant way to spend time with your kids. From Buena Vista.
