Upon watching this DVD set, I was left wondering why "The Waltons" was a popular show.

As you may or may not know, "The Waltons" revolves aound the Walton family's adventures in a mountain town in Virginia. In this 23 episode seventh season, the main storyline concerns the family's lives being affected by World War 2. There are also plenty of stories about such topics as aging, alcoholism, health issues, and love.

People always seem to defend shows from the 60's, 70's, and 80's by saying that they were good for their time, but that is a lie. Yes, there WERE shows that were good (and still are good) in that time period and there were also plenty of shows that simply do not hold up tday. "The Waltons" is one of those shows. "The Waltons" may have plenty of relatable life lessons and clever references from the 40's, but that doesn't hide the fact that the show is a flat out bore. If people flipped this show on to be entertained, I feel sorry for them (epecially considering the fact that many classics were playing over in the cinema). Nothing about this show is remotely entertaining unless you like watching bland plots recycled from other shows. As for the cast, apparently the word acting is completely foreign to them as every one of them gives wooden line deliveries and lifeless performances. Considering how big the family and town is, that adds up to a lot of bad acting.

Like "Dallas," the fullscreen picture quality is riddled with grain, dirt, and scratches. Why can't Warner clean up their old television shows a bit? The Dolby Digital Mono audio track isn't much better. The dialogue is faint and there isn't much life to this track.

Pioneers of Television

Category: Quick Reviews
This four part history of early television from PBS is filled with wonderful, early clips of some amazing television shows from the fifties and early 60's. Divided into four parts over two discs, the areas included were Variety Shows, Late Night, Situation Comedy and Game Shows. Among the shows covered are Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Ed Sullivan, Jack Parr, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, Jackie Gleason, Dick Van Dyke, Lucy, and Andy Griffith. Modern interviews with celebrities include Tim Conway, Regis Philbin, Carl Reiner, and Dick Van Dyke. The shows leave you wanting more of early television and will probably send you on a dvd set buying spree for more of this great entertainment.
