Review

"What Love Is" is another obnoxious and pretentious indie film about male and female perspectives.

The story: Tom plans on proposing to his girlfriend at a surprise Valentine’s Day party with his buddies. Right before the party is set to begin, Tom gets a call from his girlfriend saying that she wants to break up. Naturally a confused mess, Tom tries to come to terms with the situation by having LENGTHY and LONG WINDED conversations about female (and male) attitudes, lifestyles, and point of views.

“What Love Is” is essentially a stage play mixed with bits of “Gilmore Girls” and “Clerks.” Unlike the revolutionary “Clerks,” however, there aren’t any likeable characters nor is there anything remotely resembling originality here. The characters all talk in an unrealistic mile a minute fashion that will drive the average viewer so insane that they will be shouting “Shut up!” to the television screen. As for the script, it tries to be a smart, screwball like movie, but it turns out to be nothing more than a vulgar talky movie that says the same clichéd old statements about male and female perspectives over and over.

Along with a hack script, we also get a cast of hack actors including Anne Heche, Matthew Lillard, Gina Gershon, and even Cuba Gooding Jr. I hate to say it, but maybe Cuba should stick to doing underwear commercials.

Extras:

* Blu-Ray ad, “First Sunday,” “Untraceable,” “Cleaner,” “The Good Night,” “Walk Hard,” “Revolver,” “88 Minutes,” “A Raisin In The Sun,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Three Can Play That Game,” “The Final Season.”

* “Making Love: The Making Of What Love Is” (23:13)- A basic featurette containing interviews, discussions about the cast and script, etc.

* Commentary by Mars Callahan, George Bours, and John Hermansen- The trio point out trivia/facts, praise crew members, and laugh at everything. The track is better than the movie, but that isn’t saying much.

"Cecilia" is more like a porno than a film.

It isn't that I don't like you, Susan,
because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm
strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there
haven't been any quiet moments!
