Review

Since all the boxed season sets are now available, Fox is beginning to repackage episodes with themes that cover several seasons. Abduction is the first two disc set which includes the pilot epsiode and other significant shows that deal with alien abduction; one of the major themes throughout the series. It's an entertaining package that covers major events of the series and is an affordable package for fqns who cannot put out the cash for the entire box sets. This set includes episode commentary and a new special features with series creator Chris Carter.

Black August

Gary Dourdan (CSI) stars as militant writer George L Jackson in this American Black Film Festival DVD Series from Warner. The story of Jackson's short life is told from inside the walls of San Quentin and through a series of flashbacks. Jackson ended up in prison as a result of robbing a gas station of $71.00 and spent his remaining years at San Quentin. Because of this injustice and his writings from prison, his brother and others (Angela Davis) stormed a California courthouse and held a judge hostage. Eventually, this became one of the most publicized and galvanizing events of the late 60's. Whether you agree with the politics or not , it is a fascinating look at black attitudes and the emergence of black militarism in this country.

Technically, the disc has lots of problems. Colors are washed out and visible dirt and scratches are apparent in many scenes. Sound is even worse, as most of the dialog is muddied and sounds like it was recorded in an aquarium. The acting, with the exception of Dourdan, is also amateurish. In some scenes, the acting reminded me of the talents used in porn films. Might be an interesting rent but I can not recommend a purchase on this disc.
