Review

“xxxHolic” is a bland anime series.

The plot: A teen boy named Watanuki works for a wise fortune teller/wish granter named Yuko by helping her out in dealing with supernatural spirits. The sixth collection contains episodes 21-25 (“Nail Clippers,” “Temptations,” “Choices,” and “Side Story: Reminiscence”).  These episodes mainly deal with Watanuki’s past and a mysterious woman whom causes Watanuki to become deathly ill.

Aside from seeing a few trailers here and there, I was not familiar with “xxxHolic,” which made jumping into episodes 21-25 a bit difficult. Thankfully, I managed to pick up on most of what was happening on screen, although I have to say it looks like I wasn’t missing out on much. “xxxHolic” undoubtedly has its fans, but it’s simply not my bag. To me, the show is simply too talky. Aside from some neat surrealistic imagery, such as the cow-man, giant clippers and hands popping out of the ground, there’s not a lot to grab your attention. Throughout these four episodes, we are mostly subjected to annoying characters (such as the Loli twins), lame bits of humor, empty stories, and some awkward animation to boot (what is up with the giant legs and bodies?).

Overall, I would recommend checking out another anime series like “Death Note” or “Jyu-Oh-Sei” instead of watching “xxxHolic.”

The widescreen picture is quite grainy for an anime series. I will admit that the colors/animation were quite sharp looking though.

The English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese Stereo tracks were solid. There really isn’t much sound use in this series as it is primarily dialogue driven.

Extras:

* Funimation trailers.

* Image gallery.

* Textless songs.

“Son Of The Beach” is a moronic, but semi-amusing sitcom.
