Review

"ZPG" is a provoking sci-fi flick.

Set in Earth's future, "ZPG" sees birth being banned due to overpopulation. In place of human babies, couples have the choice to adopt creepy looking talking robot babies. Wanting to have a child of her own, a woman named Carol winds up having a real child with her husband Ross. Madness ensues.

It's a shame "ZPG" isn't more well known as it is an above average sci-fi drama. Yes, the story is simplistic, but the film's bleak vision of the future is both thoughtful and intriguing (especially in this day and age). In addition, the look of the film is quite impressive considering the budget was rather small. I rather liked seeing the interactive museum that was filled with objects from Earth's past.

My one complaint is Oliver Reed. I thought he was terribly miscast in the role. I had to wonder why he made his character seem so angry and unloving. It would have been nice to see him act more human and caring towards his wife.

The 1.78:1 widescren picture quality is on par with the other Legend Film releases I have reviewed so far. Not bad, not great. The audio track, however, is quite poor. There are several loud crackles throughout the film. Yuck!

Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp

Category: Quick Reviews
This lovingly made documentary traces the roots of what is known as Sacred Harp singing, an overpowering form of worship that has thrived in the Southern U.S. and throughout the world. Using a 160-year-old hymnal, dozens of congregants get together on a weekly basis to sing a cappella worship songs for almost an entire day. The songs themselves are fascinating compositions using shape notes sung in different octaves, making for harmonies that, sung en masse as they are in these congregations, are soul stirring.

The filmmakers artfully weave a history of Sacred Harp singing in with interviews and footage of modern day practitioners performing in church settings. It in those talks with current Sacred Harp enthusiasts and worshippers that the filmmakers make a powerful statement on faith as well as offering a stark contrast to the modern trappings of megachurch services with huge worship bands and morality-driven sermons.

Movie Quotes

I've seen things you people wouldn't
believe. Attack ships on fire off the
shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams
glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser
gate. All those moments will be lost in
time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
